Cowles Bog in Dune AcresConcern for the preservation of water, beach and woodland resources of the area occasioned the appointment of this Commissioner to monitor the use and/or abuse of these resources. The Commissioner reports on any problems and gives constructive advice on environmental protection.

The Commissioner, from time to time, schedules informative lectures by persons knowledgeable in a particular field i.e. trees, plants, native plants and pests that may be causing an infestation. In addition, information notices go out if there are any problems with invasive plants and insects. Also, the Commissioner schedules a yearly spring cleanup.

Check Announcements for current events.

The Environment Commission distributes information on natural landscaping in the dunes and on invasive plants. Invasive plants and trees are of particular concern to Dune Acres: Oriental Bittersweet, Garlic Mustard, alien Lyme grass (Leymus Arenarius), and the Tree-of-Heaven. In addition, the Emerald Ash Borer is an exotic invasive insect that threatens North American ash trees with extinction. (Note: Click on the preceding links for additional information.)
